Oahu is one of the eight major Hawaiian islands. Geographically it is the third largest, but it is by far the most densely populated. Well known for its hospitality, Oahu is commonly called the gathering place. What better way to gather friends and family than with a luau Oahu. Thanks to the welcoming nature of the native islanders, you will feel right at home.

There are several business that offer luau packages, so you can choose which looks the most appealing to you. Most of these services offer luau packages priced to suit your budget. From the basic to the deluxe, whichever you choose this will be real Hawaiian fun for all.

Some packages are for the party, feast and entertainment. Others include so much more, so guests and tourists have the chance to immerse themselves in the Polynesian culture and history. This type of planned event lasts all day long, from noon to nine pm, and is priced comparably to the luau only package.

If you have never experienced this traditional island party, here is what you can expect. There will be Polynesian food like poi, fish, bananas and pork. Meat and fish are cooked underground in keeping with tradition. The festivities will include Hawaiian music and entertainment. Hula dancers in traditional grass skirts, leis and flowers in their long hair will perform. Some of the guests may want to join in the hula dancing. There will be non alcoholic punch for the underage set and exotic cocktails for the adults.

The traditional luau was only held to celebrate special occasions and to honor local milestones. In the beginning, guests sat on mats made from the leaves of the hala tree, lauhala leaves. The feast has always been held to bring people together in a spirit of unity. The Oahu culture is very family oriented.

The Polynesian Cultural Center is the most popular paid attraction. The Center offers a wide assortment of packages to help tourists get to know the island better. You can arrange tours to iconic sights that you have read about in books. A tour of Pearl Harbor is meaningful to many Americans for different reasons. Imagine a guided tour of a volcano. The Center can tell you all about the events and sights that will be most memorable, including the luaus.

It is very interesting to learn what the island was like before the Western influence. Oahu was once a monarchy with a pronounced hierarchical society. When the Christian missionaries came in the 1800s they strongly influenced the existing culture. The Christian influence was just the beginning of outsiders coming to the island. The existing culture is rich in diversity with the coming together of many cultures.

The Hawaiian Islands joined the United States on August 21, 1959. The islands are officially a State, but they remain their own cultural experience. Certainly tourism and western business left their impression, but with any luck the fascinating culture of Oahu and the other Hawaiian islands will remain.
