Most guitar players will occasionally need their instruments repairing or modifying to suit their playing style. Whether it is an electric model or acoustic these instruments do sometimes suffer from faults and will require attention. If you are searching for guitar repair there are a couple of places to start and also things that can be done by the player to keep instruments in good order.

Guitar stores are usually the best place to visit when you need your instrument looking at. Most shops will have a repair or inspection service and will look after your instrument for you. Yearly checkups and intonation setups are also a very common service offered by music stores in most areas.

There are now also many online repair services available to guitarists and in some cases this option can be more convenient. When you speak with them they will ask you what the problems are and get your instrument collected and taken to them. They will then decide what work needs to be done and contact you with a price for the job. If your guitar has to be taken by a courier it should be fully insured in case it gets lost or damaged in transit.

Prices charged for repairs will be dictated by the severity of the fault or damage. Little problems such as a broken tuner or missing frets will not be too costly and will be a reasonably quick fix. Bigger problems such as neck replacement or arch top repairs will be significantly more expensive and take much longer.

There are a few things the player can do to keep their instrument in good condition and to prevent damage. Guitars should always be kept in a hard case when not in use and this will keep it safe from knocks and moisture. Each time you play your instrument you should clean it with a dry cloth before putting it back into the case to remove any perspiration which can damage the wood.

With electric models there are a couple of things that need to be done regularly. Necks and bodies should be well maintained and kept in prime condition. Electrical pots, cables and the pickups should be periodically checked for any wear. Your strings should be changed fairly regularly depending on how much you play and this will help to keep the neck true.

Acoustic instruments also need to be looked after by their owners to prevent damage and unnecessary wear. Instruments should be regularly cleaned with the appropriate polish and tuning pegs will need oiling. If you keep your instrument out of its case it should be kept on a stand to prevent it getting knocked over while it is not in use.

If you have to store your guitar away for an extended period there are a couple of things that should be done. Clean the instrument thoroughly before putting it in the case and always store in a clean and dry area. Packets containing moisture absorbing gel should also be placed in the case and this will soak up any moisture that is in the atmosphere.
